Lash serums are one of the few product categories where I get asked for a straight opinion rather than a routine. So here it is. We stock the Obagi Nu-Cil Eyelash Enhancing Serum because it's the one I'm comfortable recommending to patients, and this is why, along with the caveats I give in clinic.
What it is, and what it isn't
Nu-Cil is a cosmetic lash serum. It is not a prostaglandin-analogue product (the class that includes prescription lash-growth medicines and some of the serums that caused eyelid darkening and irritation a few years ago). Instead it's built on Obagi's NouriPlex technology: a blend of peptides, biotin and panthenol designed to condition lashes and support the look of fuller, thicker, longer lashes over time. That matters for two reasons. First, it's a lower-risk choice for most people. Second, it means expectations should be set accordingly: it conditions and supports what you have, it doesn't change your biology.
How to use it
- Once a day, at night, on clean dry skin after you've removed make-up and any eye cream.
- One stroke along the upper lash line, at the base of the lashes, like eyeliner. You don't need to coat the lashes themselves.
- Let it dry before anything else goes on. Don't apply to the lower lash line.
- Be consistent. A missed night here and there is fine; a missed fortnight sets you back.
A 3ml tube used this way lasts around three months, which is the realistic trial period for any lash product.
What to expect, and when
| Timeline | What most people notice |
|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | Little visible change; lashes feel softer and more conditioned |
| Weeks 4–8 | Glossier, slightly fuller lashes, especially at the outer corners; mascara sits better |
| Weeks 8–16 | The visible difference in length and density usually lands here with nightly use |
| After 16 weeks | Maintenance: three or four nights a week |
- Weeks 1 to 4: honestly, not much you can see. Lashes may feel softer and more conditioned. This is the point most people give up; don't.
- Weeks 4 to 8: lashes typically start to look glossier and a little fuller, especially where they were sparse at the outer corners. Mascara tends to sit better.
- Weeks 8 to 16: this is where the visible difference in length and density usually lands for people who've used it nightly. Results vary; genetics, age and whether you've had lash extensions all play a part.
After 16 weeks most people move to a maintenance rhythm of three or four nights a week. Stop entirely and lashes gradually return to baseline over a couple of months, which is true of every lash serum on the market.
Side effects and who should skip it
Because it isn't a prostaglandin product, the common complaints (eyelid pigmentation, iris darkening, periorbital fat loss) aren't the concern here. What I do see occasionally is mild irritation or stinging if too much is applied or it gets into the eye. Use less, and let it dry.
I'd avoid it, or ask your doctor first, if you: have an active eye infection, blepharitis or eczema on the eyelids; are undergoing chemotherapy; have recently had eye surgery; or are pregnant or breastfeeding (not because of a known problem, but because it hasn't been studied in those groups). If you wear contact lenses, apply after taking them out.
Lash and brow together?
The Nu-Cil Eyebrow Boosting Serum uses the same NouriPlex complex in a larger 5ml tube for brows that have thinned from over-plucking or age. If you want both, the Nu-Cil Lash & Brow Duo is the cheaper way to buy them. For the skin around the eye rather than the lashes themselves, the ELASTIderm Complex Eye Serum is the Obagi product I'd point you to.
My verdict
If you want a lash serum that's well tolerated and you're prepared to use it nightly for three months before judging it, Nu-Cil is the one I recommend. If you want dramatic change in four weeks, no cosmetic serum will deliver that honestly, and I'd rather tell you so.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Nu-Cil with lash extensions?
Apply it to the skin at the lash line rather than the lashes, and check with your lash technician; some adhesives don't like oils or serums near the bond.
Can I wear mascara over it?
Yes. Apply the serum at night on clean skin; mascara in the morning as usual.
How long does one tube last?
Around three months with one stroke per eye nightly, which is also the sensible trial period.
